As cyclocross season aproaches we were lucky to get our hands on the Bontrager XXX LTD shoe. This is Trek's top of the line shoe. Here are a few of the features that the shoe offers.

  • inForm Pro last delivers an ergonomically optimized, high-performance fit
  • 100% OCLV carbon sole is extremely lightweight and stiff for efficient power transfer
  • Dual, independent BOA® IP1 dials for precise, zone-specific fit adjustments
  • Lightweight and luxurious TPU upper material for supportive comfort and perfect perforation pattern for breathability
  • Stiffness index 14 of 14
  • Asymmetrical design and superior lace routing system reduces top-of-foot pressure while providing a more secure fit
  • External heel cups and no-slip heel lining prevent slippage and chafing while reacting to your movements more quickly
  • Durable GnarGuard rubberized coating protects against abrasions and fights debris

The Final Say

Choosing a good pair of shoes is very important in cyclocross.. If you feet are not happy then the rest of you is not going to be happy either. However this is not Bontrager's first rodeo. They have been doing cycling shoes for a bit now and the XXX is the top of the range and they are made to preform. We got our hands on a pair of blue LTD. The LTD means Limited Edition. The LTD is available in two color configurations. You can choose style that is more subtle in a blue and back pattern or a Super Nova Red. We chose the more subtle of the tow colors. The XXX LTD has everything that you would come to expect from a high end MTB shoe. I would recommend that you size down a half size or keep your size if you like to wear thicker socks. Just like bottom brackets there is no universal standard for a particular size. So unfortunately a 45 in SIDI is not a 45 in a Bontrager. The shoe is packed with features like dual boa closures, a wrap construction so there is no tongue to mess with. Super stiff carbon sole and a very unique lug trend on the bottom to dig into the muddiest terrain. The front and back of the shoe is armored. The front has a tough rubber guard around the toe and the heel has a plastic heel cup that cradles your heel. Speaking of which the XXX LTD also has a nonslip fabric that helps keeps your foot in place while you are out on the cyclocross course tearing it up chasing down Wout or Voss. This shoe is built to last and will serve its owner well. I look forward to seeing other editions of the shoe in the coming years..
