What a Cross Bike is and Should Be

If you are viewing this site, you either love cyclocross or you are just getting into the
sport of cyclocross.  Either way, you want to know the deal on all the cool cyclocross
gear before making your purchase.  We hope this site is helpful for you.

Lets start with what a cross bike is not.

Cross bikes are NOT:
  • touring bikes
  • comfort bikes
  • fitness bikes
  • cruiser bikes
  • commuter bikes
  • hybrid bikes

While each of these bikes has their own place in the market, cross bikes are their own
breed. They are RACE bikes that can handle multiple terrains and environments.  Would
you expect anything different from your road race bike? No.

A cyclocross bike is a fine piece of equipment that is designed for the sole purpose of
racing cyclocross. That translates to a bike that should be fast, tough, precise, light and
excels in the cyclocross arena.  A cross bike will want to go out in the rain. It will love to
get dirty. A cross bike thrives throwing mud everywhere and on every one, all while
taking you safely through the slimy off-camber corners in your local race series.  It will
take you to the store and it will take you to work.  But, it will want more.....
That’s a cyclocross bike.

Cyclocross Bikes

Each bike will go through an 8-point evaluation.  It will be tested to the brink in 4
different arenas that include both road and off-road courses.  Each bike will then be
thoroughly  mashed on while enduring our trainer test.  Finally, the bike will be raced at
a local or national race.  At the conclusion of our evaluation process, the bike will be
given a over all
score utilizing cowbells, ranging from a Paper Cup (1 cowbell) all the
way to the
World Cup (5 cowbells).  At the end of the season we will give an award for
best cross bike of the year.

Cyclocross Clothing and Gear

When we first started out , we were only going to review cyclocross bikes.  While
attending Interbike, we quickly discovered that clothing and gear companies were very
enthusiastic about having us evaluate their products as well.  So we said "Sure!" as
long as they were items and apparel that would be used in cyclocross.

Our promise to you is that we will wear the clothing while we are testing the bikes.  We
will tell you how the garment or gear performed, how it fit, if it was easy to install and
where to get it.
