We Liked

I got talked into going to a bicycle craft show here in Portland OR right after turning myself inside out at the US Grand Prix. My girlfriend loves that crafty bicycle items that are retasked. While I was there I found some very interesting stuff. One both that I came across was RandiJo Fabrications. She is an artist with a love for sewing cycling caps. She makes old school style wool caps. Now back in the day cycling caps were cool in not only were they functional but you could wear them out and make a statement of that you were a cyclist. Those days are long gone with the introduction of high tech carbon fiber. Those caps use to be pretty cheap and disposable. They are still available butare now expensive in my opinion for how long they last. Enter wool! Wool is a wonderful material to make active wear out of. Having a wool cycling cap for winter training made perfect sense to me. Randi Jo thought the exact same thing. she has been making them for a little bit now.

This hat is warm with out the bulk! Let me tell you I am so happy that I have this hat on the cold damp winter rides that I am now doing here in the great Pacific North West. If its really cold I just have to flip down the Merino wool ear flaps and now I have extra coverage on the ears and the back of my neck. when it warms up a bit I can very easily tuck them back u and we are good to go.

The care of the hat is pretty simple wash cold let air dry and its as good as new. Like I said wool is awesome. Mother nature has had a long time to get it right.

So you are going into a respectable establishment and you need to take your hat off. It will pack right into your jersey or back pocket no problem. Then take it out and put it right back on no problem.

The one thing I didn't like about the cotton cycling caps of old are that after about a season they are trashed and you end up throwing them away. So if you want to keep them you cant really wear them that often. the brim gets bent out of shape and they shrink. Dont get me wrong they loook cool but they just don't stand up to time. This wool cap keeps going an going. The brim is not filled with plastic. The brim keeps its shape and wont break. How did randi jo do this? The brim is made with a stiff plyester fabric that is stiff and flexible and wont crimp or crack. Time and time again wash after wash it went back into shape.

The wool flip up is available in lots of colors. 9 colors to be exact. So you can get one to fit the mood or your particular style. We got a orange onebecause those are the colors of our cycling kits and my girlfriend is Dutch! Got to sport the colors!

In this economy you have to watch all of your pennies and make every one count. I have seen other wool caps sell for over $40 or more and this one sells for $30.00. This is worth the money.

We Didn't Like

Nothing.

The Final Say

Are you in love with the sport of cycling or cyclocross? This is a timeless classic piece that will complement anyones cycling wardrobe. Are you up and out the door right at dawn? Do you go out for long winter rides in the rain or cold? Then this is the hat for you. It not bulky and will fit under your helmet and will last a lifetime. You will find yourself wearing it more than your favorite pair of fleece pajamas. So much so that your family might feel the need to do a intervention to separate you and your new hat for a bit.

I have been wearing Randi Jo's caps for a few years and LOVE them. Soft and comfy, even under my helmet. Rivendell Bicycle Works (www.rivbike.com) commissioned custom-embroidered versions several years ago and my Randi Jo RBW cap is still going strong after three years of daily fall-to-spring riding. Since I changed teams for 2011 I'm going to have to consider getting another one to match the new kit...!
